Adirondack Railroad

For over 30 years, the Adirondack Railroad has entertained guests by transporting them through the area.  Every year, tens of thousands of passengers enjoy otherwise unviewable sightseeing opportunities and experience railway history.

Currently, the company operates The longest scenic railroad excursion east of the Mississippi. As such, there is a diverse selection of available rides, from short sightseeing tours to all-day expeditions.

We’ll go over some of the best opportunities on the Adirondack Railroad.

Adirondack Railroad Thendara Trips

Below are some of the opportunities the railroad provides at the Thendara station. We are focusing on this station due to it being the closest station to us. Feel free to visit their website to find out more about longer trips from Utica.

Note that all train rides are round trip.

The Big Moose Explorer

From spring through fall, The Big Moose Explorer expedition allows passengers to travel from Old Forge to Big Moose, NY. The ride goes deep into verdant forests as well as over rivers and streams. Passengers will be able to get up close views of the natural scenery available here in the Adirondacks.

The round trip is estimated to have a duration of 1 ½ hours. This combined with the affordable ticket prices makes this a perfect choice for families of all ages.

Adirondack Mountaineer

For those wanting to get a unique way to experience what the area has to offer, consider purchasing tickets for the Adirondack Mountaineer.

This train excursion takes you deep into the Adirondacks to marvel at the natural beauty of the area’s forests, rivers, and streams. Along the way, you’ll be able to light or hearty fare in the café car.

Leaving Thendara station, you’ll journey to Tupper Lake, NY, where you’ll be treated to a 4 ½ hour layover to experience local shops and restaurants. Transportation services are provided in Tupper Lake that will take you to some of the best attractions in that area. The entire duration of the Mountaineer is estimated to be 8 ½ hours

Dinner Train Series - Thendara

Held during the summer, The Adirondack Railroad Dinner Train Series offers a refined, romantic dining experience. The handcrafted menu is designed by renowned local chef Patrick O’Connor, owner of Feast and Festivities by O'Connor's. The menu consists of a three-course meal with dessert, as well as light refreshments upon boarding and disembarking.

The dinner train ride itself takes you from Old Forge to the Stillwater Causeway in Beaver River, allowing you to experience truly breathtaking scenery along the way.

Be sure to book this trip well in advance, as there are usually only a limited number of excursions planned.

Adirondack Rail Bike Adventures

Rail biking in NY is a fantastic way to see the great outdoors while getting in a bit of exercise. Adirondack Railroad’s Rail Bike Adventures allows guests to go on up to 2-hour excursions, pedaling along railways while enjoying the surrounding mountains and forests.

The rail bikes allow up to 4 passengers and private bikes are available. There are no age restrictions, although younger children are required to be safely secured through an approved carrier, seat belt, or five-point harness. Each rail section is closed to other traffic, allowing you to explore at a more leisurely pace.

These affordable adventures are only available during the warmer months.  As such, it is a good idea to dress for the occasion and bring along items such as sunscreen, bug spray, and water.
